THE WORK

The core components of our work are networking, sharing information, facilitating securing resources, and promoting repair as a social value.

The Culture of Repair Project is concerned with work in The East Bay and is currently concentrating on initiatives in Oakland and Berkeley, CA.

Our focus on repair hatched in the spring of 2017.  Plans are underway.  Programs are stirring.

RESEARCH — THE EAST BAY

Our work emerges from research into current conditions and opportunities in The East Bay.

The principal questions are:

  • Who’s thinking about repair and what are they thinking about?

  • Who's not thinking about repair but should be?

  • What needs to be done to move us along?

We welcome suggestions and contributions to our research.

BIG PICTURE RESEARCH
& WORLDWIDE INITIATIVES

Our work is informed by "big picture" research.

The principal questions are:

  • How do we understand repair in the larger scheme of things?

  • What are the forces working for and against repair, and how do we work with them?

  • What difference does repair make?

The Culture of Repair Project is further informed by examining initiatives in other places, asking ourselves:

  • Is these people's work relevant to The East Bay?

  • What can we learn, and what parts of their work can be productively deployed here?

  • Is there an opportunity for mutually beneficial collaboration?

Words worth spending some time with...

Kintsugi — "golden joinery" — "... the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum, a method similar to the maki-e technique. As a philosophy, it treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise." (wikipedia) — also: boro, wabi-sabi, shibui, and mottainai
